Laxmi Lakra, a 27-year-old woman, is the first woman engine driver for Northern Railways. She belonged to a poor tribal family in Jharkhand. Laxmi’s parents were illiterate, and they had to struggle and overcome many hardships to make sure their children got an education. Hence, Laxmi had to study in a government school. Even while she was in school, she helped with the housework and did odd jobs. She studied very hard and did well. After her schooling, she went on to get a diploma in electronics. She then took the Railways Board Exam and passed it on her first attempt. Thus, finally, all her struggles paid off after she became the first woman engine driver for Northern Railways.
