Why Bombay is called a city of dream
  • 1 answers

Gaurav Seth 7 years ago

Bombay is known as a 'mayapuri', a 'City of Dreams' for the following reasons:

  • Despite its overcrowding and lack of sanitation facilities, a continulous stream of migrants pours in the city of Mumbai, i.e., erstwhile Bombay. This so since Bombay has historically provided ample eocnomic opprtunities for those seeking to find employment.
  • Also, Bombay has historically been the centre of the Hindi film industry. This has given the city a sort of glamour.
  • The many migrants who travelled from cities like Lahore, Calcutta, Madras portrayed Bombay as a city that gave everyone the opprtunity to realise their dreams.
  • The cumulative  effect of these factors was that the image of Bombay got germinated as the city of dream and reality, of slums and star bunglows.
