Main ore of mercury is cinnarbar, HgS.
The extraction of mercury from cinnabar ore involves two steps:
1. The concentrated mercury (II) sulphide ore is roasted in air to form mercuric oxide (HgO).
2. This Mercuric oxide formed is then reduced to mercury on further heating to about 300oC.
2HgS(s) + 3O2(g) {tex}\;\xrightarrow\triangle{/tex} 2HgO(s) + 2SO2(g)
2HgO (s) {tex}\;\xrightarrow\triangle{/tex}2Hg(l) + O2 (g)
