The non cooperation movement was initially began with the participation of the middle class section. Thousands of teachers, students and lawyers joined the movement by leaving their institutions and professions. It spread in different cities throughout the country.
The Non Cooperation movement has severe economic effects
a. This movement boycotted the import of foreign goods and clothes. As a result, the import of foreign goods decreased between 1921 and 1922. Its value reduced from 102 crore to 57 crore.
b. In many places merchants denied trading in foreign goods or make investments in foreign trade.
c. As people refused to use foreign clothes, production of Indian clothes began to rise. Production of Indian textile mills and handloom industry went up. The movement gave a boost to the economy of India.
