  1. Reduce ethanal/acetaldehyde to ethanol with hydrogen or lithium aluminiumhydride
  2. React ethanol with PCl5 to get chloroethane
  3. Use KCN to add extra one carbon in the chain, followed by acidic hydrolysis to get propanoic acid
  4. Propanoic acid is reduced by LiAlH4 to get propanol
  5. repeat step 2
  6. repeat step 3, but the product will be butanoic acid
  7. Reduce butanoic acid with LiAlH4 to get butan-1-ol
