Shivaji Maharaj collected taxes called chauth and sardeshmukhi from the rulers he subjugated. Chauth, which means one-fourth of the revenue was paid to buy protection from Maratha attacks. Sardeshmukhi, which means one-tenth of the revenue was a tribute which Shivaji Maharaj demanded as the self-proclaimed chief headman of the region he controlled.
