The lining of canal has muscles that contract rhythmically in order to push the food forward .These are called peristaltic movements .These movements occur all along the gut.

The movement along the oesophagus of the alimentary canal is termed as peristaltic movement. It helps in the smooth passage of food from buckle cavity towards stomach.
