Two charges +4e and e are fixed 'a' distance apart. Where should a third point charge q be placed on the line joining the two charges so that it may be in equilibrium? In which case the equilibrium will be stable and unstable?

At a/3 distance from charge 'e'. Firstly for equilibrium the net forces should be zero, so try placing q at x distance from either of the charges and then take both forces to be zero. As charges are of same nature, equilibrium should be in btw the two charges 4e and e.
