Mahatma Gandhi was not responsible for partition.

I think it is unfair to hold Mahatma Gandhi solely responsible for the partition. The muslim league created deep rooted hatred among himdus and muslims, the direct action day proclaimed by Jinnah led to massive riots in parts of bengal and punjab. Both congress and muslim league refused to accept the recommendations of the cabinet mission thusthe partition was imminent. Gandhi on the other hand was so devastated by the outcomes of partition tthat he returned to his asharam in sabarmati. So i am of the opinion that Gandhi could have made more efforts to avoid the partition but he was not solely responsible.
