When it goes in the direction of flow of river means downstream then we have to add (x+y) and if goes opposite to the direction of flow of river means upstream then we will subtract (x-y)

If any boat is moving in direction of river flow is known as DOWNSTREAM and

moving opposite to river flow is UPSTREAM.
