Coordination number is the number of atoms, ions, or molecules that a central atom holds as its nearest neighbours in a complex or coordination compound. For example: In [Mo(CN)8]4-, The central metal Mo is linked to eight cyanide ion, thus the metal atom has coordination number 8.
Similarly, in [Pt(NH3)4]2+ , Pt is linked to four NH3 molecules. Hence, its coordination number is 4.
