Gold number is the minimum amount of protective/lyophilic colloid in milligrams which prevents the flocculation of 10ml gold sol by the addition of 1 ml of 10%NaCl solution.
Reciprocal of gold number indicates the protective power of a colloid. Smaller is the gold number, more is the reciprocal and thus more is the protecting power of the protective colloid.
