Chemical reactions involve the breaking and making of chemical bonds. Energy is required to break a bond and energy is released when a bond is formed. This energy change accompanying the formation or the breaking of a bond between two atoms in gaseous state is known as bond enthalpy.
Fluorine has lower bond enthalpy than chlorine. This happens because of the size of fluorine is small and F-F bond length is short.Due to this the electrons lie very close to each other and very large electron electron repulsions take place which weakens the bond.
Hence the bond enthalpy of fluorine becomes less than chlorine while nothing so happens in the case of chlorine.

Property H-F H-Cl
Bond length (pm) 91.7 127.4
Bond enthalpy(kJ/mol) 574 432
