If A(4, 3), B (-1, y), and C(3,4) are the vertices of a right triangle ABC, right angled at A, then, we have to find the value of y.
By Pythagoras theorm,
AB2 + AC2 = BC2
or,(4 + 1)2 + (3 - y)2 + (3 - 4 )2 + (4 - 3)= (3 + 1)2 + (4- y)
or, (5)2 + (3 - y)2 + (-1)2 + (1)= (4)2 + (4 - y)2
or, 25 + 9 - 6y + y2 + 1 + 1 = 16 + 16 - 8y +y2
or, 36 + 2y - 32 = 0
or, y = - 2
