Retention: Retention refers to the process wherein the configuration of the molecule is retained after the reaction. Therefore the product molecule has the same configuration as the reactant molecule.
Inversion: Inversion refers to the process wherein the configuration of the molecules is reversed during the course of the reaction. Therefore, the product is of the opposite enantiomeric form as compared to the reactant.
