In India, novels created a sense of social awareness in the following ways
(i) In India, novels criticised the prevailing ills in the society and also suggested remedies.
(ii) Premchand lifted the Hindi novel from the realm of fantasy, moralising and simple entertainment to a serious reflection on the lives of ordinary people and the social issues.
(iii) Novels dealt with everyday life of the society and took up almost every aspect of social life from love and marriage to proper conduct of the common man.
(iv) Issues like child marriage, widow re-marriage, dowry system, helplessness of the poor, miserable condition of untouchables, etc. all included in the story of novels in an interesting way.
