The free peasants were paid they're the remnants of the land belonging to the Lord. They also performed unpaid services life gathering fire wood, digging, building fences, helping in the field. Besides women and children were engaged in fields and pressing grapes for Lords. The serfs cultivated the Lords land but produces are only meant for Lords. They're not paid, the Lord had monopolies like they can use Lords wine press for grinding wheat and can use the oven for bread.
