Ethers are inert to most chemical reactions. Because,it is quite unreactive. diethyl ether makes an excellent solvent for many reactions. Many more organic compounds will dissolve in ether than in hydrocarbons, because the oxygen atom in ethers imparts some polar character to the ether molecule.
