Ans. Elements having partially filled d-orbitals in ground state or in excited state, are known as transition elements. They have been placed in the centre of the Periodic Table between s-block and p-block elements.

In chemistry , the transition metal has three possible meanings : the IUPAC definition defines a transition metal as "an element whose atom has a partially filled d sub-shell , or which can give rise to cations with an incomplete d sub-shell".
