Democracy means as defined by Abraham Lincoln is" of the people, by the people and for the people". It has succeeded in maintaining the dignity & freedom of citizens by-
1. It allows every citizen with basic Fundamental rights- Right to equality, Right to freedom, Right against Exploitation, Right to freedom of Religion, Cultural & Educational Right and Right to Constitutional Remedies.
2. In a democratic country, everybody is equal before the law. Therefore, the laws are not different for different people. Everybody enjoys equal status and gets equal opportunities to study, earn a living, and so on.
It is very important to understand that "there can be justice only if there is equality"; and in a democratic country all are treated equal ad with respect.
3. The most important way in which democracy has succeeded in maintaining the dignity & freedom of citizen is that people have right to choose their leaders that is they have "RIGHT TO VOTE". All adults above the age of 18 should and can choose their own leaders.
