Some important physical properties of ethanoic acid are as follows:
1.Ethanoic acid or acetic acid is a colourless liquid.
2. It is soluble in water, the 5 - 8% solution of Acetic acid in water is called vinegar.
3.Ethanoic acid melts at 290 K and boil at 391 K.
4.It solidifies on cooling to an ice like crystalline solid which looks like a Glacier and hence its name is glacial acetic acid.
5. It produces painful blisters in contact with skin.
6. It burns in air with a pale blue flame.
Some chemical properties are as follows:
1.Action on Litmus- Ethanoic acid is a weak acid in nature. It turns blue Litmus red.
2. Reaction with alkalis: ethanoic acid reacts with alkalis or bases to from Salt and water.
CH3COOH + NaOH -----> CH3COONa + H2O
3. Reaction with alcohol: When ethanoic acid is heated with an alcohol in the presence of concentrated H2SO4 an ester is formed. This is a slow reversible reaction and is called esterification.
CH3COOH + C2H5OH ---Conc. H2SO4→ CH3COOC2H5 + H2O
4. Reaction with carbonates and bicarbonates: ethanoic acid decomposes carbonates and bicarbonates producing a salt, carbon dioxide and water
2CH3COOH + Na2CO3 -----> 2CH3COONa + H2O + CO2
CH3COOH + NaHCO3 -----> CH3COONa + H2O+ CO2
