Shams-ud-din Iltutmish suceeded Qutb-ud-din Aibak. He is called the real founder of the Sultanate because of the following reasons :-
1. He put down the rebellions within the empire.
2. He also protected the north-west frontiers of the Sultanate against the possible Mongol invasions.
3. He expanded his empire up to Bengal.
