Iron and steel industry called a heavy industry because it is a basic industry which supply raw materials to the automobile companies. Steel is the main alloy which is used to make many utensils.

(i) The raw materials and finished goods are heavy and bulky.
(ii) The transportation costs are heavy.
(iii) Iron ore, coking coal and limestone are required in the ratio of approximately 4:2:1.
