Halogens contain one unpaired electron. It excites from visible region to higher energy level and when it comes back to the visible region, it emit light.

Because unpaired electron absorbs energy from visible region and get excited to higher energy level and when it came back to lower energy level they emit wavelenghts due to which they get coloured.
