It is true that democracy is the best way to fight for recognition and reconciliation of social diversity. In democracy, political expression of social division is quite normal and healthy. India, Belgium and Yugoslavia are examples where social diversities have been accommodated in a very positive manner.
Reservation of seats in the Legislatures and government service for the people belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) offers such an example. Even women have been given reservation in local bodies and efforts are being made to reserve seats for them in Parliament and State Legislatures.
It is true that people who are discriminated against or marginalised have to fight against the injustice shown to them. Sometimes their struggles even become violent.
But generally they take the democratic path in voicing. their demands in a peaceful and constitutional manner through their elected representatives. ’
