The handloom cloth production expanded in the 20th Century because of the following reasons:

  • The World War I had resulted in a rising demand for the needs of the army. The war drained all of Britain's finances and hence causing a depression. Britain could no longer afford to trade in India. Meanwhile, the handloom trade in India expanded.
  • People preferred handloom over machine made textiles. Though machines made cheaper cloth, it could not remake the fine designs that one could make with hand.
  • Handloom was seen as a sigh of refinement and wealth. The aristocrats and the nobility would prefer handloom cloth over the machinee-made cloth.
