Proto-industrialisation is the phase of industrialisation that was not based on the factory system. Before the coming of factories, there was large-scale industrial production for an international market. This part of industrial history is known as proto-industrialisation.
1) In the early 18th century, large parts of the English countryside were open.
2) It was not partitioned into enclosed lands privately owned by landlords.
3) At the beginning of each year, each villager was allocated strips of land of varying quality to cultivate.
4) Beyond these strips of cultivation lay the common land to which all villagers had access.
5) These common lands, rivers and forests helped them in grazing, fishing, collecting fuel wood, fruits and hunting.
6) The common land was essential for the poor to survive as it supplemented their meagre income, sustained their cattle, and helped them tide over bad times when crops failed.
