In the presence of malonate, increase the concentration of the normal substrate and see whether the rate of reaction increases. If it does, malonate is a competitive inhibitor. Malonate is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme succinate dehydrogenase: malonate binds to the active site of the enzyme without reacting, and so competes with succinate, the usual substrate of the enzyme.en water sample at certain temperature over a specific time period.
