In the late 18th century, French society was socially divided into 3 estates namely, the 1st estate, consisting of the clergy, the 2nd estate, comprising of nobility and the 3rd estate, including teachers, lawyers, businesspersons, peasants, artisans etc. The burden of taxation was completely on the shoulder of the 3rd estate, who were most perished. This was a contributing factor in the outbreak of the revolution.
