All metals in salt water tend to rust/anodize/oxidise rather rapidly. However, each metal has a different susceptibility to oxidation. When two metals are in contact with each other in sea water, a galvanic cell is created, which basically results in the transfer of electrons from one metal to the other. The result of the electron transfer is the prevention/slowing of oxidation (oxidation = loss of electrons). In this case, the magnesium transfers electrons to the iron and so the iron effectively rusts more slowly. The magnesium on the other hand, acting as a "sacrificial anode" anodises very quickly.
