(i) People were afraid to travel by London underground railway because they thought they were menace to health. A newspaper reader warned the public of compartments full of smoking pipes, fuel atmosphere, which was a mixture of sulfur, coal, dust, and fumes from the gas lamps.
(ii) Many people called the underground railways as iron monsters, which added to the mess and unhealthiness.
(iii) The famous writer Charles Dickens, in one of his novels, criticised the railways for knocking down houses, digging deep pits and benches. “To make two miles of railway, 900 houses were dug up.” This led to the massive displacement of the London poor
