 Let the speed of the stream = x km/hr
Speed of the boat in upstream = (5 - x) km/hr
Speed of the boat in downstream = (5 + x) km/hr
Distance = 40 km
Time taken in upstream = {tex}{40 \over (5 - x)} hr{/tex}
Time taken in downstream = {tex}{40\over (5 + x)} hr{/tex}
According to the question,
{tex}\frac{40}{{5 - x}} = 3\left( {\frac{40}{{5 + x}}} \right){/tex}
⇒ (5 + x) = 3(5 - x)
⇒ 5 + x = 15 - 3x
⇒ 4x = 10
⇒ x = 2.5
Therefore, speed of the stream = 2.5 km/hr.
