Multipurpose river valley project are basically designed for the development of irrigation for agriculture and electricity through the construction of dams. Initially, dams were built only for storing rain water to prevent flooding but now it became multipurpose like supplying water for domestic and industrial uses,recreation,inland navigation and fish breeding.

Dams are known as multi purpose projects because they perform multi functions such as inland navigation, irrigation, transportation, electricity production. It's advantages are creating problem in spawning, displacement of population, vegetation submerge , preventing natural flow of sediment
