An extreme situation where basic means of livelihood is endangered. The population of France rose from 23 million in 1723 to 28 million in 1789. This lead to a rapid increase in the demand of food grains. Price of bread which was their staple diet rose rapidly. Poor people cannot buy. So, the gap between rich and poor widened. This lead to subsistence crisis.
