In 1774 when Louis XVI ascended the throne he found an empty treasury. Long years of war had drained the financial resources of France.French Society was divided into three estates and only the third estate paid taxes.To meet the regular expenses the taxes were increased and burden was only on the third estate. The Church too extracted its share of taxes.Subsistence crises worsened the economic condition in France.
