Mahatma Gandhi found in salt a powerful symbol that could unite the nation.Salt was something cosumed by the rich and the poor alike, and it was the most essential item of food.Gandhiji sent a letter to the Viceroy Irwin stating eleven demands. The idea was to make the demands wide-ranging so that all the classes with in the Indian society could identify them and everyone could be brought together in a United campaign. This salt march marked the beginning of Civil Disobedience Movement.
