An action potential can only depolarize the membrane “in front” as the membrane “behind” is in its refractory period and cannot be depolarizes, so the impulse travels in one direction only. The synapse acts as a valve and only allows one way flow due to the neurotransmitter being formed on one side of the synapse and the receptors only being on the other side. So, nerve impulsion is unidirectional.
