  1. In the First World War, in the end, Turkey was defeated. There were rumours that a harsh treaty is to be imposed on the Khalifa, the spiritual head of the Muslims all over the world. There was a fear that the power of the spiritual head of the Islamic world (Khalifa) would be curtailed.
  2. The aim of the Khilafat Movement was to defend the Khalifa’s temporal powers. So, to defend Khalifa’s temporal powers, a Khilafat Committee was formed in Bombay in March 1919.
  3. A young generation of Muslim leaders like the brothers Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali consulted Gandhi for his support. Hence, the Khilafat Movement was the initiative by Muhammad Ali and Shaukat Ali.
  4. Gandhiji saw this as an opportunity to bring Muslims under the umbrella of a unified national movement.
  5. At the Calcutta Session of the Congress in September 1920, he convinced other leaders to start a Non-Cooperation Movement in support of the Khilafat Movement.
