Peristalsis facilitates forward movement of food through alimentary canal. This helps the food to reach to different portions of alimentary canal at the right time. Thus, it helps in digestion. Peristalsis also helps in timely clearing of bowel. The lining of canal has muscles that contract rhythmically in order to push the food forward. This is known as Peristaltic movement.
