Electric potential is defined as the amount of work done to bring unit positive charge slowly(acceleration =0) from infinity to at a certain point in the given electric field .
Electric potential is a scalar quantity. It is assigned both the negative sign and positive sign only with respect to a certain reference potential or potential of frame of reference.
