Mahatma Buddha established Sangha in order to propagate Buddhism in an organised way.The sangha was the religious order of the Buddhist. It contributed greatly in popularizing Buddhism. The buddha had two kinds of disciplines:monks (Bhikkus),lay worshipers (followers ).The sangha,Buddha,dhamma were the three main organs of Buddhism. Soon the Buddhist sangha become the controller of the life style of the monks and the most powerful weapon for the spread of Buddhism. Buddha organised sangha on democratic lines.Membership was opened to all person irrespective of caste .Criminal, leprosy and person affected by infectious diseases were not give admission into sangha. The bhikkus and bhikkunis have to observe certain rules while living in the sangha. These are contained in Vinaya pitaka.
