The origins of the Sri Lankan Civil War lie in the continuous political hatred between the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamils. The roots of the modern conflict lie in the British colonial rule when the country was known as Ceylon.

Civil war means a war within country among different groups. In Sri Lanka the Civil War was led by LTTE (Liberation tigers if Tamil Elam). They were demanding a separate state for Tamils.
