When dilute sulphuric acid is poured on zinc granules, then zinc being more reactive than hydrogen displaces it from the acid and forms zinc sulphate and hydrogen gas. The hydrogen gas can be tested by bringing a burning candle or a match stick close to the mouth of the test tube in which the reaction was performed. Hydrogen is a combustible gas and burns with a popping sound. So, when a burning matchstick is brought close to the mouth of the test tube, a popping sound will be observed.
Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2
