The artists used female figures to represent the abstract idea of a nation by means of a female figure, not taking nay particular female that existed in reality. The female figure became the allegory of the nation. The French artists used female allegories to represent the ideals of liberty, justice, and republic. The figure was christened as Marianne which is a Bible name. Her statues were built on public squares to remind people of the concept of liberty and republic. Her figure was also used on coins, government documents to represent the idea of their nation.
