A Dam is a barrier across the flowing water to obtructs dissects or retards the flow,often creating a reservoir, lake or impoundment whereas a multi purpose project is that which fulfils a variety of purposes at the same time ,for example-electricity,flood control,soil conservation etc.

a Multi purpose projects are those projects which are designed for multiple purposes involving construction of dams to provide for irrigation needs, flood control, generating electricity. It involves construction of dams.
