Arthur H. Keller was the father of Helen Keller. He had served as "a captain in the Confederate Army" during the Civil War. He married his first wife and had two sons. He later married his second wife, Kate Adams, who was twenty years his junior. He was a newspaper editor, and he also managed the Keller Homestead. He and Kate had their first child, Helen. She was bright and energetic until contracting the illness called "acute congestion of the stomach and brain," which left her deaf and blind. He and Kate had two more children, a daughter and a son.
Helen Keller later described her father as a loving man who spent as much time with his family as possible, except when he was hunting. He was a hospitable man and an accomplished gardener. It was his appreciation of nature that inspired Helen to love flowers and trees. He was also an excellent story-teller. Arthur Keller died in the summer of 1896.

Mr. Arthur H. Keller, Helenβs father was a captain in the Confederate Army and editor in "North Alabamian magazine. His father was Caspar Keller who was Swiss. Kate Adams, Helenβs mother was his second wife and many years younger to him. He was a perfect gentleman who was devoted to his family. He was a renowned hunter and shot. He was known for his hospitality. He loved gardening. Often he would narrate stories to Helen which she liked considerably. He was also specialised in hunting and was jolly person.
Next to his family he loves his guns at most. He also welcome guests to his home and made the happy at most. He was a nature lover and took a great care on his garden. He filled the garden with roses, tulips, buttercups, and at most the garden was surrounded by English ivy. He used to help Helen in feeling the fragrance and identifying the flowers. He was such a dedicated father as he took a great care on Helen. He tried to hide the disabilities of Helen and succeeded by Miss Anne Sullivan.
The news of his sudden death after a short illness in 1896 left her dazed and forlorn.
