The dehydration of alcohol in presence of a dehydrating agent such as concentrated H2SO4 yields ehene as the final product .

The following steps as represented in ( i ) are involved ,

(i)  generation of protonated alcohol by the interaction of a proton (H+) from H2 SO

(ii) removal of a water molecule from protonated alcohol to yield an ethyl carbonium ion

(iii)abstraction of ptoton from the ethyl carbonium ion  to give out ethene

                ( i )
