Before Independence 1. Indian agricultural economy was largely subsistence in nature before Independence.. 2. It had dismal performance in the first half of twentieth century. 3. This period witnessed severe droughts and famines . 4. During partition about one - third of the irrigated land in undivided India went to Pakistan. 5. This reduced the proportion of irrigated area in Independence India . After independence 1.
