The Mughals traced their ancestry to both the Turks and the Mongols. Babur, the first Mughal ruler, was the ruler of the Fargana Valley of Uzbekistan and was a Chagatai Turk, which made him a direct descendent of Genghis Khan on his mother's side and a descendent of the Turco-Mongol ruler Timur on his father's side. The term "Mughal" comes from a mispronunciation of the word "Mongol," but the Mughals of India were mostly ethnic Turks not Mongolians.
