Sodium has ns^1 electrons in its outermost shell.soo it is easier to remove electron from half filled state.whereas in magnesium,it has ns^2 electrons.where its valence shell is filled so it is harder remove its first electron. But after removing 1 electron sodium is stable and magnesium is half filled.so it is harder than magnesium that of sodium.
